Patterdale to Rosgill
Farewell to Lakeland. Our last walk amongst the high peaks and one that will be remembered by all, particularly the 'B' party. Alarm bells should have been ringing when the details came round the coach for the 'B' walk, 'this is really an 'A' walk but we'll take it steady and I suggest you have your lunch before leaving the coach'! Some eight and a half hours later the walk was completed by all, although one or two finished on wheels not feet.
The 'A' party ascended High Street (2718) and the 'B' party went via Kidsty Pike (2560), a total of 14 or 13 miles according to the instructions. However some deviation from the route by the 'A' team caused problems for the following 'B' team adding to the distance they had to cover.
I had decided in my wisdom to do the 'A' walk as High Street sounded rather pleasant but n
ot a shop in sight. We climbed steadily to Angle Tarn where we had at least 10 minutes for lunch before proceeding to the Roman Road on the summit of High Street. Unfortunately the heavens opened and spoilt our 5 minute break and made the descent very tricky. We turned off the summit and descended steeply. clambering down rocky paths and eventually reaching the reservoir Haweswater, in the bottom of the valley, where we had a well earned
rest in the sun.It was evident by this time that we were not going to make the 6.00 pm coach departure and neither were the 'B' party who were still on Kidsty Pike. It was a very long 6 mile trek along the side of the reservoir and across the fields to Rosgill where our very patient coach driver William from J.A.K Travel was waiting for us.
The poor 'B' party had to follow the same route as there was no alternative and we finally got away at 8.50 pm, nearly 3 hours late.
There were a lot of very tired people on that coach but spirits were high and there was a great sense of achievement amongst the group at having conquered the lake District.
