Orton to Kirkby Stephen

Our last section this year and another beautiful day. We have been so lucky with the weather on these walks with very little rain. I decided to do the 'A' walk this time as the going looked fairly easy and there wasn't too much climbing. We set off at a brisk pace and soon were heading for the highest point of the walk with good views of the Howgills and Wild Boar Fell.
Then we made our way across some areas of limestone paving before eventually descending to Smardale Bridge, where we had a fine view of the viaduct that carried the old
railway line between Tebay and Kirkby Stephen. Finally onwards to Kirkby Stephen where we had plenty of time for a drink or fish and chips before the journey home. Our next walk will be in the springtime in Swaledale and I'm looking forward already to those wild flowers and spring lambs!

Altogether a very pleasant day out and a sociable walk with lots of opportunity for conversation.
